Mastering the Masterpiece

Every word you’ve ever learned
bleeds from your pen;
the odd ones that you stumble
across in crosswords,
the strange ones that you tripped
over in the dictionary.

These words fall out of the nib
and onto the page, and everyone
is impressed but you will always
be disappointed, because
it’s your first novel and it’s
not how you imagined.

Standing ovation, singing
your praises, positive
reviews and you are
disgusted because it’s
not how you imagined.

Perhaps you should not
have written it,
in the first place.
You’ll never be happy.
